Says Bartees about his recording: “About Today is one of the National's biggest songs, and it's also a song that I've come back to over the years as an example of the power of being deliberate. The song is a straight shot, very few changes. The emotions are expressed clearly. It's a sad song, with very few words. I wanted to capture that simplicity—and darken the vibe. The tune has always been dark to me."
